River Rock Blues Band

Hosting Blues Open Mic from 8 to 11

Calling all blues players! The blues open mic gives aspiring blues players the opportunity to play in front of a live audience. Players of all levels and abilities are encouraged to play one of America’s greatest exports: the blues.  It’s a great networking opportunity too; many local blues bands have been created from connections made at the River Rock jam. Tonight the jam is hosted by the crackerjack River Rock Blues Band: Mike Fritz (piano, harp, vocals), Tom Yates (guitar and vocals), Dave Fox (drums) and Tom Sheppard (bass).

Friday, August 13

Julian Baptista

On the deck from 6 to 9:30

Julian Baptista is a young singer/songwriter from Salem, Massachusetts who performs modern folk rock; acoustic songs with an edge. Julian’s songs tell stories about justice, love lost and gained, and about personal discovery.  Julian began learning guitar at age 11 and was professionally trained to sing both popular and classical opera music. Julian's first album “Lost in the Crowd” was recently released. North Shore area musician and producer Raymond Gonzalez both produced and performed on this album.

Whether burning through a funky Herbie Hancock piece, swinging a Thelonious Monk standard or singing the blues, Mike brings unbridled passion to every performance. Add in his unique work on the harmonica (Mike makes his own customized “harps” for different tunes), the crackerjack rhythm section of Dave Fox (drums) and Tom Sheppard (bass), and the eclectic Tom Yates on guitar, and you’re guaranteed a great night of music.

Peter Smith Trio

Jazz from 7 to 10:30

Greatly influenced by the songs of the Great American Songbook, the Peter Smith Trio, featuring James Gordon on jazz guitar, John Hagerty (Bonnie Rait and James Taylor) on acoustic bass and vocalist Peter Smith, deliver a program of jazz standards featuring the songs of Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Bobby Darin and Tony Bennett. Smith is equally comfortable swinging Irving Berlin’s Blue Skies or Cole Porter’s I’ve Got You Under My Skin as he is delivering emotively resonant versions of Moonlight In Vermont or Rodgers and Hart’s Where Or When. Hagerty’s driving bass and Gordon’s beautiful, understated guitar work make this trio a must see.

Calaboose

Hosting Blues Open Mic from 8 to 11

Calaboose has been honing their craft in many bands for years before finding each other and now they are really rockin' the house.  Lori sings with great bluesy gusto, lending her voice to the best tunes by Etta James, Susan Tedeschi, Norah Jones, Bonnie Raitt, and Janis Joplin.  The band also kicks it up, covering Derek and The Dominos, CCR, the Beatles, Jerry Garcia Band, Bo Diddley, Jimi Hendrix, The Band, Taj Mahall, and many more.  Andrew's guitar playing, inspired by his heroes from all the above bands, has played all over the area in the Regulators, (then Deregulators) ascap recording artists and a mainstay at the Framingham Blues Festival, also opening for Robert Cray at the Hampton Beach Casinso.  Tom's venerable ivory tinkling embodies the soul of Jerry Lee Lewis and Professor Longhair.  Vinny lays down a solid bottom end which Gordon 's fine drumming complements.  Put 'em together , stir 'em up...it's Calaboose!
